Research:
Material suppliers play an important role in the successful delivery of construction projects. Selecting the appropriate supplier to provide the right materials at appropriate costs and with the right quality is of paramount importance to project success. However, the construction industry has been characterized by its fragmented supply chain structure and siloed information flows, which brings great challenges to the project clients in finding the right supply chain partners or material suppliers. Traditional practices heavily rely on tender or negotiation processes or simply the client’s self-managed supplier catalog, which prohibits the clients from accessing vast opportunities for the best-fit suppliers. To explore and transfer the benefits of e-commerce into construction, this project will focus on the design of an “Amazon version of homes”, which is a web-based digital platform to help project clients to access a wide ranges of suppliers, logistics providers, and sufficient materials and procurement information. The digital platform also allows the suppliers to share information about their products, materials, and services online.
